The Calyx Institute is a supporter of the Tor network and collaborates with The Tor Project its work.

Tor is free software and an open network that helps you defend against traffic analysis, a form of network surveillance that threatens personal freedom and privacy, confidential business activities and relationships, and state security.

Tor is an acronym that stands for 'The Onion Router'. "Onion Routing" refers to the layers of the encryption used.

The Calyx Institute is a supporter of The Tor Project and its work, and cooperates with the The Tor Project in several ways:

  • First, we contribute to the robustness of the Tor network by operating a number of servers that operate as 'nodes' within Tor's public anonymity network. Currently our servers pass nearly 3 Gigabits/second of anonymized Internet traffic.
  • Secondly, we offer the ability to access many of our services via Tor's hidden service functionality, such as our websites, our XMPP service, our Mumble service.
  • Third, we do research and experimentation on the adaptation of existing network services to be deployed in production as hidden services
  • Fourth, we produce educational material teaching different ways to use Tor such as our AroundBlocks website and training materials.
  • Fifth, we operate a mirror of Tor's website and installer archives for their Tails ( The Amnesic Incognito Live System ) project.
